Hi-Yo is a short-haired gray super-cat with an overdose of personality. He's lived with me for ten years. The first six of those years, he was an indoor-outdoor cat. But one summer the area in which I lived was beseiged with a plague of fleas, and between the exterminator and myself, it finally became apparent that we were poisoning the animals along with the fleas. So Hi-Yo came inside for good, and with great reluctance, I had him declawed so that I wouldn't end up hating him for tearing up my furniture. At first, everything was just fine: Hi-Yo adapted cheerfully to his restrictions. He followed me around the house like a little dog and seemed perfectly content to lie in the sunlight coming in through the window. But as autumn approached (and a relief to our plague of fleas), he seemed almost desperate to get back outdoors again. I couldn't allow him to roam without his front claws to protect him, but I could let him outside in my company, on a long twine, staying clear of the trees of course. Curiously, Hi-Yo headed straight for the grass, where he grazed for several minutes. Initially, I thought this behavior was due to an upset stomach, but over the course of several weeks and repeated grazing each time we went outside, I finally got the message: Hi-Yo needed something he wasn't getting in his food. Okay, grass should be easy to supply. But it wasn't so easy. I couldn't always take him outside when he wanted to go and stand around watching him eat his greens. Besides, in the winter there was no grass. I resorted to growing grass in a pot indoors. Hi-Yo appreciated this, but the results were mixed, and the grass didn't look very happy - it just needed more sunshine. Then I discovered the Super Blue Green Algae Animal Food and decided to give it a try. Well - I need to say that after six months on the Animal Food, if the Cat Show had a catagory for short-haired gray domestic cats, Hi-Yo would win the blue ribbon hands down! He has become just about the most glorious feline speciman of good health that I've ever seen. His coat is thick, soft and shining, his eyes sparkle, and he behaves like a cat half his age. This is one happy animal, and he doesn't even beg to go outdoors any longer. Besides, plain old grass never did for him what the Animal Food is doing. And what he's given me in return for my gift to him, is a cat box that doesn't smell! Maybe it's the natural chlorophyl in the SBGA Animal Food. Whatever it is, I'm grateful. I hate to think of all the poor cats out there who are restricted to the indoors and are slowly dying of malnourishment, due to the same type of synthethic-overprocessed-nonfood that we humans are shortening our lives with. I'd like to shout it from the rooftops and put up billboards - if we love our pets, we need to start nourishing them properly.EXTRA CAT TIP - VERY IMPORTANT: I also live with a cat who is fifteen years old. Hula's lifetime diet has been the best cat kibble that money can buy. In spite of this, after years of chewing kibble, her teeth are worn down almost to her gumline. She can no longer chew up the kibble, so her diet must consist of only soft food. Sad, but true - the "experts'" recommendation of a diet of purely their "wonderful" kibble is grossly misinformed. Perhaps if we humans lived on nothing but hard-biscuit consistency, our teeth would wear down in fifteen years, too. No more hard kibble for my cats. Hi-yo's dinner tray now consists of good quality canned food and a small dash of water mixed well with a little kibble and allowed to sit for a half hour and soak up moisture to soften it, before it is served to him. Certainly it's more trouble than just pouring kibble into a bowl, but believe me, you will prefer the trouble to the guilt you have to live with when you discover what you've done to your beloved cat's teeth. |
