Upper Klamath Lake is actually a nutrient trap. Protected by the high Cascade Mountain Range and fed by geothermal hot springs, there is no erosion here. All of the minerals our bodies need are held here to become a natural part of the blue green algae. Because of the massive abundance of minerals, the algae grows to its greatest potential.

Compare this lush, natural lake to the controlled growth ponds that produce Chlorella and Spirulina. The water that is used to grow Chlorella and Spirulina will have far less and fewer minerals than the water in Upper Klamath Lake. This means the algae farmers have to add chemicals to the water. If their water is chlorinated, then there is an excess of chlorine in the algae. If their chemicals contain pollutants, then the algae is polluted. It's that simple.

The mineral content of the soil has been drastically reduced by overproduction. Chemical fertilizers, DDT and other toxic substances have been added to the soil over a period of years and may cause the levels of toxic substance in the plants to reach an unacceptable level.
