Back in the early 1940's, when I was a tiny girl, my father sang "Sweet and Low" to me at bedtime. It is one of life's mysteries that over sixty years later, I can easily forget what I ate for dinner the night before, but I still remember the words to that lullaby. Well, most of them anyway. To clarify my memory, I visited Ambleside Online. The complete poem by Alfred Lord Tennyson (1809-1883) follows:

Sweet and low, sweet and low,
Wind of the western sea,
Low, low, breathe and blow,
Wind of the western sea -
Over the rolling waters go,
Come from the dying moon, and blow,
Blow him again to me;
While my little one, while my pretty one, sleeps.

We never forget those warm, loving, safe times, nestled close to Mommy or Daddy while they sang or read to us. They are the building blocks of healthy adults - they sustain and comfort us through difficult times.
