Healthy foods for every colour of the rainbow

Healthy foods for every colour of the rainbow

The best benefits of any healthy diet will be unlocked when you can get the balance just right for you. In order to help you balance your body’s different requirements, sometimes it can be helpful to get creative with how you group certain foods. For example, thinking about this rainbow spectrum of different ideas might inspire you to add some colour to your diet! Here are some ideas based on colours to look out for.

Red – Vitamin C

Tomatoes are one of the best sources of vitamin C around, and other bright red fruits and vegetables tend to have similar benefits. It’s a common misconception that red wine is healthy too, because it contains a compound that can combat heart disease. Unfortunately, it’s in such a low quantity that you couldn’t drink enough wine to benefit from it, but a glass every now and then is perfectly healthy.

Orange – Beta-Carotene

Oranges are another well-known source of vitamin C, which benefits your immune system and overall health, but vitamin A can also boost your immunity as well as fighting cancer and other diseases. You’ll find it in beta carotene which is found in many orange vegetables like sweet potatoes and, of course, carrots.

How to improve your lifestyle

How to improve your lifestyle

Dieting

Diet, exercise and nutrition are great starting places to improve your overall quality of life. Losing weight, toning up and making sure your body is receiving the correct nutrients will help to reduce illness, increase energy and improve confidence.

The internet is a great source of information on pretty much every diet ever created. Popular diets that provide proven results are weight watchers, low carb diets such as the Dukan Diet, keto, paleo and the Mediterranean diet. Most of these diets focus on reducing the amount of processed foods, and creating high quality meals from natural ingredients. Many of the faster working diets focus on reducing the amount of carbs you consume each day so your body has to switch to burning stored fat as an energy source.

Exercise apps are a great way to tone up and burn calories without the need for costly gym memberships. Simply search your app store of choice and you’ll find a whole host to choose from including 5 minute workouts, yoga and pilate, and much more.

Smoking

We all know smoking is dangerous for us, so why do we still do it? You may think it looks good, relieves you of stress or you started a long time ago and just can’t stop, but serious health conditions can come from it. Yellow teeth, premature ageing and hair thinning are the least of the side effects. Cancers, infertility, cardio and respiratory diseases are the most worrying. If you’re trying to improve your lifestyle, stopping smoking will be difficult; you need motivation and support from family, peers and health professionals.

There is a range of methods to help you stop including nicotine gum, patches and sprays. Another popular method that many smokers enjoy using is electronic cigarettes. These are a great alternative to traditional cigarettes, allowing you to still get a nicotine hit but without the harmful chemicals. They are available in different sizes and designs, with a massive choice of flavours, so you can choose whichever you feel comfortable with. If one method doesn’t work for you, don’t give up, just try another and try to stick it out as long as possible.

How a healthy diet can improve your overall well-being

How a healthy diet can improve your overall well-being

We all hear a lot about the benefits of dieting to help you lose weight. This is really the main thing people tend to focus on when discussing healthy eating since obesity continues to be a problem in the UK and other countries around the world. However, there are so many other reasons to improve the quality of your overall diet other than just helping to reduce your body fat. Your mental and physical health can both benefit from making positive changes to what you eat.

Regular meal times – One thing many people struggle with is keeping to the traditional three-set meal times per day. You don’t necessarily have to have breakfast, lunch and dinner, as some people find it feels better to have smaller meals more frequently, but you should try to find some consistency in your routine. This helps your body process food more healthily and gives you a more accurate sense of how hungry you are. It also helps you find some structure in your life which can help you stay grounded at stressful times.

Could Teeth Whitening Help Build Your Confidence?

Could Teeth Whitening Help Build Your Confidence?

Confidence is a vital aspect of mental health, which in turn has a profound on our overall health. Although our society is becoming more aware of mental health issues, we still find it hard to identify what is happening in our own minds a lot of the time.

Identifying the root cause of a lack of confidence can sometimes feel impossible, although in reality a combination of small factors could make a huge difference. One of these may actually be teeth whitening, something you may not have even considered before.

Research on teeth whitening and confidence

A few years ago, research was commissioned by the leading teeth whitening product manufacturer Crest, with the intention of proving a positive link between teeth whitening and success with a first date or a job interview. Participants used whitening strips on their teeth before taking part in these activities, and the results were compared against other participants who didn’t use the strips.

The results showed that as many as two thirds of the people taking part were perceived as more professional, confident and successful. This is interesting, especially when you consider the nature of the scientific link between cause and effect in this case. The data shows a correlation, but that is not to say that whiter teeth led directly to being perceived differently. What is does imply is that the people with visibly whiter teeth were happy enough with the results that they felt more confident in themselves and actually impressed the researchers more.

The other element of the research in this case, alongside the interviews, indicates more strongly that tooth whitening can help you build self confidence. This comes from a survey that all participants completed, where the majority of them also indicated that they considered physical appearance to be an important measure of how successful, confident and trustworthy someone appears. Of course, these are major factors in many important life situations.

Top Tips For Healthy Skin

Top Tips For Healthy Skin

Skincare may be one of your daily routines, but what if you discovered you could be doing more for your skin? You may even be doing things that cause damage without even realising, so it’s worth consulting with experts. That’s why we took inspiration from Diane Nivern, an award winning facialist in Manchester who has worked with many well-known clients, to help us produce this list of top tips.

• Whatever you do, stick to a daily routine as much as you can. The majority of home skincare products will only work effectively when used over a long period of time.

• Cleansing twice a day is vital. Every morning and every evening you should cleanse and follow that with your other products. Include a facial massage as you do this to help improve the overall quality of your skin.

• During your skincare routine, apply products designed for delicate skin first, such as around the eyes, before moving on to the rest of your face.

• To help with shadows or puffiness around the eyes, gently pull the skin downwards before using a tapping motion when you apply eye cream. Both of these actions can help to encourage lymph drainage.

A health-conscious guide to cocktails

A health-conscious guide to cocktails

It’s understandable that many of us focus on food when it comes to counting calories and thinking about our health. We know that drinking alcoholic drinks isn’t great for our health, but we don’t tend to think of them as fattening in the same way we would with food. This might be a serious mistake! Luckily, we can do plenty to cut down on calories, simply by choosing wisely. Here’s our ranking of cocktails according to how good (or bad) they are for people watching their weight.

1) Long Island Iced Tea –

To begin with, let’s look at one of the most calorific drinks of all! A true Long Island Iced Tea is absolutely packed with sugar, including Coke, sugar syrup and natural sugars from the lemon juice, not to mention all the various spirits. You could easily consume more than 600 calories with a single serving.

2) Pina Colada –

Likely to contain over 450 calories per glass, a Pina Colada normally contains cream which packs in a lot of them. It’s also high in natural sugars due to the pineapple juice, which is of course a particularly sweet fruit.

Top tips for dealing with motion sickness

Top tips for dealing with motion sickness

Motion sickness can be extremely unpleasant and inconvenient for people who suffer with it chronically. It’s something of a mystery as to why some people experience much worse symptoms than others, but we do know that it’s a severe problem for many. The symptoms can include nausea and vomiting, as well as headaches, sweating and even hyperventilation due to stress.

However, you don’t necessarily have to be resigned to the fact that you won’t ever be able to travel comfortably. Motion sickness has a cause, and even if we can’t identify it at first, we can try different methods to regulate the body’s senses until something improves the symptoms. Here are some ideas that you can try instead of medication, if that doesn’t appeal to you or has failed to work.

1) Desensitise yourself –

Before you travel, if you know nausea is likely to be a problem, it’s worth training yourself. Try travelling for a short period of time to expose yourself to the symptoms, then stop to recover. Keep increasing the amount of time until you feel increasingly comfortable. For many people this process is slow but very effective.

2) Avoid upsetting your system –

Before and during your journey, regulate your food and drink intake. Alcohol is unlikely to help, and the same goes for anything too rich or fatty that’s harsh on your digestive system. Ideally you don’t want to be too full or too hungry.
